Australian Internet Pirates Appeared to Be the Best Customers
A recent research sponsored by the Australian government has revealed a drop in piracy rates, largely attributed to improved availability of legal streaming alternatives. But the most interesting thing in the report is that the much reviled Internet pirates are often the best customers.

Australians have always been criticized over their consumption of illegal content, with the copyright owners insisting that Aussies simply don’t want to pay. However, evidence suggests otherwise.

It turned out that many pirates who favor torrent, streaming, and other file-sharing services state their motivations in different terms, pointing out that content providers debut content later, less conveniently, and at increased cost in Australia. Fortunately, the situation has been improving, and new research revealed that when users have sensible legal alternatives, they are ready to at least reduce their pirating habits.

First of all, the research found that 62% of Internet users consumed at least one item of digital content in 2016, of which 39% obtained content by downloading (down from 43% in 2015). At the same time, streaming increased from 54% to 57%. Consumers streaming content on a weekly basis increased significantly: 71% streamed music and videos games, 55% – TV programs and 51% – movies.

Of course, many consumers prefer unauthorized sources to obtain that content. However, their number is steadily decreasing, and the research results demonstrate that the situation is far from the disaster painted by the entertainment industries: it was found that 23% of Internet users pirated at least once, down from 26% in 2015. Just 6% of Internet users exclusively obtained content from pirate sources.

Why did people choose between paid or illicit services? 50% of the consumers cited convenience as the main reason to use paid services, and 39% cited speed. 37% wanted to support creators and did not want to use pirate sources. As for pirates, they chose free content (52%), convenient content (44%) and quick content (41%).

43% of Internet pirates confirmed that better pricing could stop them infringing. 35% explained they had to use illicit sources because their content was not available in Australia at the same time as elsewhere.

Payday Loans Company Hired Hackers to Attack Consumer Website
The founder of a payday loans company Elite Loans hired hackers to attack a consumer rights website in retaliation for carrying customers’ complaints about his activities.

The company owner was tracked down by the Federal Bureau of Investigation after paying the US hackers for launching an attack on the Consumer Action Group (CAG) website. The man is also accused of paying hackers to target websites of rival payday loan firms. As a result, a 35-year-old was sentenced to 4 months in prison, suspended for a year. The site owner was also ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work and to pay £530 in legal costs after admitting 5 charges of commissioning hacks.

It turned out that the founder of the payday loans company contacted hackers after his business had been criticized on the CAG website, a popular venue for consumer rights discussion. He tracked down hackers on an online forum about hacking and paid them for the attempt to bring the website down, though it was unsuccessful. Besides, he also paid £2,000 to hackers to launch hacker attacks against the websites of his rivals. The hackers used DDoS attacks, which involves flooding the target with superfluous requests and overloading their systems. In most cases, the effects of such attacks are quite significant, because such microlending companies are too reliant on their websites to generate business.

The company used the Liberty Reserve payment system, based in Costa Rica, which was shut down by the American government 3 years ago amid fears that criminals were using it. During its investigation into the system, the US authorities came across the payday loan site’s dealings with hackers and contacted officers in the United Kingdom.
Computer Festival Organizer Ran Pirate Torrent Site
A few weeks ago, Swedish police seized the domain name of one of the largest local private torrent trackers, Rarat.org. Following the investigation of PayPal, the authorities managed to identify and arrest the prime target. To their surprise, he also happened to be an organizer of the largest computer festival in the world, Dreamhack.

Rarat.org is relatively unknown in other countries, but in Sweden it gained local fame as one of the most popular private trackers. However, a few weeks ago the Rarat’s homepage was replaced with a message notifying the site visitors that the site’s operators were subject to a search, seizure, and arrest, following a complaint from a movie company that tracked down the site’s PayPal payments.

Indeed, it turned out that Nordisk Film, SF and Disney filed a criminal complaint against the tracker 3 years ago. The complaint lists 5 movies, and the total scale of the damages could reach over a million dollars. Eventually, PayPal identified the person who received Rarat’s donations and passed this information over to a special unit of Sweden’s Department of National Police Operations, which tracked down one of the alleged operators of the torrent tracker.

It was also found that the prime suspect was involved in the organization of the winter edition of Dreamhack, the largest computer festival. About 50,000 computer and gaming fanatics will attend the upcoming event in Jönköping. Earlier in November, the Dreamhack organizer was arrested and taken in for questioning over the charges of copyright infringement. Besides, his house was searched, and several computers were seized as evidence. The alleged site operator denies his involvement with the torrent tracker, but Dreamhack has put him on leave from work.

Google Unbanned Pixel Phone Resellers
The tech giant changed its mind and stopped disabling the accounts of customers who resold Google’s new Pixel phones. The decision was made after facing multiple complaints over Google’s imposition of a “digital death penalty” for a minor infraction. Google has already emailed users who had been banned and notified them that it had re-enabled their accounts. Originally, users had been disabled for taking advantage of tax loopholes to earn a profit reselling the device.
